4 Tips to Prevent You From Slipping When Tap Dancing

Tap shoes can slip when the shoe, its condition or the studio floor does not suit the movement. No shoe feature can guarantee traction on every surface. Stop dancing if you feel unsafe and check the floor and the exact pair before continuing.

For general shoe-traction checks beyond tap, see our guide to making dance shoes less slippery.

Check the exact shoe and its condition

Tap shoes differ in sole, tap-plate and upper construction. Read the selected model's product details and care instructions. Look for visible dirt, worn areas or loose parts. Do not assume every tap shoe has the same grip pads or behaves the same on a polished floor.

Check fit and fastening

Use the sizing guide for the exact model. The shoe should feel secure without painful pressure, curled toes or obvious movement inside the shoe. Lace-up and strap styles fasten differently; follow the product guidance and ask your teacher if you are unsure which style your class allows.

Follow the studio's floor rules

Ask your instructor which shoes and traction products are permitted on the floor. Do not add tape, powders, liquids or other grip treatments unless the studio approves them; they can change the floor surface and affect other dancers.

Clean and maintain the shoes carefully

Follow the care instructions for the specific model. If the guidance allows, wipe the sole with a clean, dry cloth and let damp shoes air dry away from direct heat. Do not loosen or tighten tap screws yourself. If a tap plate, sole or fastening is loose or damaged, stop using the shoes until they have been checked or repaired by a qualified person.

Compare tap shoe styles

Dynadans offers different constructions, including strap tap shoes, lace-up tap shoes and slip-on tap shoes. Compare each product's fit, fastening and material details with your class requirements before choosing.
